“While I and much of America grieved the murder of another unarmed black man by police, protestors took to the sites of confederate monuments to reject the violence and white supremacy embodied in these statues. These defiant acts of courage felt galvanizing and served as tangible evidence of a long overdue reckoning with systemic racial oppression. Meanwhile, standing in the White House Rose Garden, Donald Trump defended the confederacy declaring that, “We must build on our heritage not tear it down.” Cloaked with thin veils and echoed through dog whistles, these words charge me with the sense of urgency to vote them out!“

Donald Trump has repeatedly named minority groups or ethnic groups as the enemy, while using violent and racially-charged language to describe his ideal response to minority groups. Donald Trump has praised the militarization of the police force and violence between civic authorities and the community, and used racism to defend those positions. At the same time, he has repeatedly criticized black neighborhoods and black communities. It’s time to end these racist stances.

Nekisha Durrett is a mixed-media artist who often employs the visual language of mass media and advertising to bring forward historical connotations that objects and places embody, but are not often celebrated. Durrett’s expansive practice includes public art, social practice, installation, murals, painting, sculpture and design. Leveraging media ranging from magnolia leaves to LED billboards, she is invested in foregrounding issues of Black and queer lives while summoning the poetic from beneath the familiar and the literal to create a space where fantasy, imagination, and history converge. She earned her BFA at The Cooper Union in New York City and MFA from The University of Michigan School of Art and Design as a Horace H. Rackham Fellow.
